about illume
Experience RACE Dance Collective in the world premiere of illume, a multi-genre and immersive dance performance. Audiences will journey through an array of human emotions and perceptions to be enlightened by a deeper understanding of the complex realities within themselves and humankind. illume will occur in the beautiful Te Ata Theater at Oklahoma Contemporary Arts Center, located at 11 N.W. 11th Street. Performances will be at 8pm on Friday, June 10, and Saturday, June 11.
Like a triple bill, illume will have three sections exploring layers of grief, individual perceptions of an “ism” (a distinctive practice system/philosophy), and moments of joy. Choreographic works include New York acclaimed artist Mike Esperanza, and local guest artists Josh Okpara, Hui Poos, and Allison Mclemore. Live music will be featured throughout the performance by hip-hop artist Original Flow and hip-hop brass band The S.E.A.R.C.H. Committee.
ILLUME IS A MULTI-GENRE DANCE EXPERIENCE ABOUT HUMANHOOD
that explores the vastness of being human in grief, our perceptions of a philosophy or belief system, and our moments in joy. illume not only ask you to watch but to contribute your own light to the space.
Disambiguation, the first section of the performance, examines the stages of grief through the lense of five different choreographers. The second section, pr[ism], examines individual perceptions of an “ism” (a distinctive practice system or philosophy).
The third section explores moments of joy through collaboration between RACE dancers, hip hop artist Original Flow, and hip hop brass band The S.E.A.R.C.H. Committee. Seating will be rearranged to reflect a circular pattern, creating a more communal feel to your experience. This section is a joyful mix of choreographed and improvised dance and music.
